Wiiware What
I downloaded a couple of new Wiiware games today. I am not pleased.
Mega Man 9
I love Megaman games. I love the original Megaman games. I do not love this new ‘original’ game.
If you’re not aware of the current status of Megaman, Capcom decided to save themselves a bunch of money and just spit out an 8-bit version for all of the new systems. Pretty much the same old crap, except now it’s 1980 again. I don’t really have a problem with that though. My problem is with the game’s insane difficulty.
It’s not that it’s challenging - that’s a good thing. What I can’t stand is that the levels are basically designed to make you want to throw your controller through the nearest window. Screen too easy? Just add spikes. Moving platforms not tough enough? Add spikes. Mini boss not challenging enough? Add spikes.
That and even small enemies seem to take about 1/4 of your total life bar when you get hit. I dunno, maybe I’m just losing my touch.
Helix
Helix is a game that’s trying really hard to be DDR. On the surface it looks good: You dance in time with the song that’s being played while trying to mimic the avatar on screen. It’s got a ton of moves to make you look like an idiot (uppercut! disco poses! karate chop!), and it even suggests that you play with two wiimotes at once (very cool idea for a single player game).
The game has a lot of good ideas, but the technology just isn’t there. All of those moves you have to mimic? It’s not very strict on grading. In fact, I’ve found that you can just flail around in time with the song and it doesn’t matter what move you end up doing. Good idea, bad execution, not worth $10.
