Convince me to Keep my Wii
I’m seriously considering trading my Wii for a 360. The Wii has been a huge disappointment, and with the 60 gig 360 dropping down to $300, I’m wondering if I should make the switch.
Basically, the Wii is still going for $300+ on eBay. Throw in my extra controllers, games, and accessories, and I’m looking at an easy $500 or so. That means I could buy a brand new 360, a year of XBL, a second controller, and two or three games.
Here’s my reasons against keeping the Wii:
- I haven’t played a Wii game in months. The only reason I turn it on anymore is to play old Gamecube games.
- The game lineup just plain sucks. I can only think of five good 3rd party games, and four of them are ports. I’m not thrilled with the first party titles either.
- Smash Bros online support still sucks. Enormous letdown.
- My cats chewed through my sensor bar cable.
Reasons for keeping:
- Virtual console…oh wait I can just emulate those games.
- Resident Evil 5 and Dead Rising…oh wait, the Wii versions are gimped.
- I don’t own a Gamecube…oh wait they cost like $30 now.
- Possibility of future good games (although, it’s been two years and I’m not holding my breath).
- Smash Bros Brawl for parties.
- XBox red ring of death.
- I don’t have an HDTV for full XBox glory.
I guess I only have one concrete reason to keep it. Can anybody come up with something better?

You can mod a Wii without getting b& from online play.
There has been a lot of negative press about Nintendo lately which can overshadow the good things about the Wii. Of course it’s expected since it got surprisingly popular with everyone since its release. But here are some reasons why I think you should keep it:
- There are some very good games on it right now. They aren’t as numerous or as well known as the offerings on the 360, but they do exist. Some quick examples are: No More Heroes, Super Mario Galaxy, Zack and Wiki, Sonic and the Secret Rings, Mario Kart Wii and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. A lot of them had silent releases so it depends on how much material you read for the Wii while getting through all the fluff about a 70 year old grandpa using it for rehab.
- Since you already invested in the Wii, I think talking about the future is a viable venture. This has several subpoints to this
- While it’s all hearsay, there are several developers and publishers who are slowly realizing that there is a market for the “hardcore” games akin to the PS3 and 360. While quality will vary, I could see more games other than the weird mini-games at least getting announced over the next few months.
- Games like The Conduit and Samba de Amigo sound pretty promising. The new Sonic game also looks pretty exciting, but I still warn cautious optimism with this.
- Megaman 9 will be coming out soon. If you have any interest in this, then I’d suggest getting the Wii version for the controls. If you have the classic controller, it’s much better than what the 360 has with the crappy D-Pad (the joystick just doesn’t seem right to me). If not, I assume the Wiimote will work alone, and that’s just as good.
- Wii Motion Plus sounds like it will bring some good things to the Wii and make sports games more exciting. While I’m holding on until closer to release when other people can use it, I think it seems great.
I’m not sure if I went over the word count, but I’ll just leave it at that. If you want, you can talk to me on AIM to get more specific about my reasoinings if you like.
