The Corporate Machine
The company that I work for was acquired by a much, much larger company yesterday. They’re based out of Texas, and they’re one of the largest dedicated hosting companies in the world. This sudden change has a number of pros and cons:
Cons
- We’re no longer a tiny “startup” type company, so I’m guessing the relaxed, unprofessional atmosphere is going to go. That means no more Youtube, no more crude/racist/sexist humor, and definitely no more 4chan.
- We’re guaranteed employment for the next 6 months. After that, it’s up to the new bosses to determine who stays and who goes.
- It seems like there’s a high chance of them shutting down this office within the next couple of years, forcing us to either quit of move to Texas (not necessarily a bad thing for me, but bad for the younger college students).
- I wrote about it on my other blog and my bosses found it. Oops.
Pros
- At the meeting, I brought up the fact that we still don’t have a Windows admin program. Big boss said that the creation of one would be a “top priority”. In other words, my bosses now have a big Texan boot in their asses. The admin program, which has been “in development” for something like a year now, might finally be finished.
- People who are higher up than me have been alluding to pay increases.
- 401(k).
- I get a bonus at the end of the year equivalent to my average monthly pay for the past six months.
- I still retain all of my current job perks.
- I may actually have a future with this company. I always considered TS a temporary job, with not much room for advancement. Now that we’ve been acquired by a giant company, I have a lot more room to go up.
- Relocation bonus if I choose to move to Texas.
It looks like more potential good than potential bad. I’ll keep my optimism guarded.
