Video Games Galore

I’ve been gaming a bit lately, so I thought I’d share some impressions:

The Orange Box - Team Fortress 2

If you like first person shooters, and you haven’t bought the Orange Box yet, you really should.  TF2 is fun, and more importantly, it requires strategy, unlike your standard deathmatch FPS.  John and Rick already own it, so hopefully the three of us will have time to play a few rounds every now and then.  My favorite classes, in order of preference, are Pyro, Heavy, and Sniper.

Dragonball Z - Japanese words 3

This one’s for the Wii, and I’m currently renting it from Gamefly.  I rented it just to see how it would make use of the Wii’s unique controls, and so far I’m impressed.  Want to pull off a Kamehameha with Goku?  You actually have to mime the motions with the Wiimote.  It’s pretty neat.

There are somewhere around 150 playable characters, and the game goes through every saga from Dragonball Z.  I’m going to have this game for awhile.

Resident Evil:  The Umbrella Chronicles

I’m finally done with this game, I just need to mail it back.  Nothing too innovative, although it’s a good demonstration of what light-gun games can do on the Wii.  I especially like it because it moves away from your standard light-gun game mechanics.  If you don’t know how games like Duck Hunt and Area 51 work, basically whenever you pull the trigger, the entire screen goes black except for the enemies for a split second.  The rapid blinking gets really annoying, and the Wii overcomes it with its motion-sensing hardware.  I hope to see more (good) light-gun games for the Wii soon, because I’m one of those people who would spend $10 in the arcade just to beat House of the Dead.

Speaking of games I want for the Wii, where are the real time strategy games?  I’ve never liked RTS’s on consoles before because controlling them with a d-pad is slow and clunky.  I think the game developers knew that too, so they’ve stuck with PCs because they have a peripheral that makes it easy to point, click, and drag (a mouse).  Well guess what?  The Wii has a peripheral that makes it easy to point, click, and drag too.  You can even hook up keyboards and mice to the console.  Why then, have we not seen any RTS’s?  I mean, Blizzard ported Starcraft to the N64 close to a decade ago.  Put Starcraft on the Wii with full support for the Wiimote and beef up the online multiplayer capabilities, and you’ll sell millions of copies.
