Anime is Weird
I’ve been watching a lot of anime lately, mostly because I’ve had nothing better to do. I’ve noticed one common theme in nearly every anime series I’ve ever seen: Japan has no concept of what is age-appropriate. How so?
Let’s say I’m a character in a mecha anime. At 21 years of age, I’d be a hardened war veteran with a bad attitude and a small squad of rebellious youths under my command. I’d most likely have some mysterious, yet tragic event that took place earlier in my life, which would be hinted at throughout the entire series. Maybe I slaughtered an entire village. Who knows, but I’d probably spill my guts around 2/3 of the way through the series. Anyway, towards the end of the series, I’d probably end up sacrificing myself to save the 14 year old protagonist who, despite my 9 years of combat experience, exceeds me in battle in every way due to his super secret magic robot that’s the only hope for the world. The protagonist would then save the day and present my dog tags/bandanna/picture of me to my widow (who is most likely 7 months pregnant with my unborn son). The protagonist would then swear to uphold my memory and the series would end.
Anime is weird.
