Goals

This semester has been tremendously stressful for me, partly due to the fact that I work 32 hours per week in the evenings after class. I feel like I would have done a lot better this semester if it wasn’t for my job, so I’ve started taking steps that will hopefully lead to a reduced need of work hours in the future. I’ve begun developing a network of sites with targeted ad placements that will hopefully start generating income for me within the next month or two. If I can get them to generate $10 per day, I’ll be pretty happy. At $20 per day I’ll ask for a reduction in hours. At $50 per day, I’ll probably quit my job.

This job hasn’t turned out to be what I thought it would be. When I was hired back in February, I was told that the department would grow quickly, leading to a need for a tiered support system and eventually admins. Since then, almost nothing has happened. As far as I can tell, we’re still in the red financially, meaning in the last 10 months of our existence, we haven’t turned a profit. I’m still level 1 (just like all the other techs) and I’ve only received 1 raise. My manager received a couple of promotions and has pretty much vanished from the Windows scene. The upper management never has any news for us. The Linux techs are mostly pricks. This department is going nowhere and I don’t like that.

I had originally hoped to work my way up to being a Windows admin with this company, but seeing as how the Windows admin package has been “in development” for around 8 months, I doubt that’s going to happen. In addition to that, I never receive any feedback about my work, so I’m always wondering how I’m doing quality-wise. Add that to the fact that if I get lost, there’s nobody I can ask for help, and my company loyalty is hovering just above rock bottom.

Basically, if I can generate 150% of my current income via my own private ventures, and if nothing changes at my job, my ass is out the door.
