Home power system

I think it would be cool to build a green power system. The thing is, I fail at Electronics.

I have enough technological knowhow to build everything in my diagram except for the box of mystery. I could probably build something to accept power from one of the above sources, but I don’t know how to make it accept from multiple sources.
If I can find a free stationary bike, I’m thinking of rigging it up to a motor to create a generator. That part is easy, and would probably make my little system work. The hard part is when I want to add more sources. I’d like to add a solar array at some point, and maybe even some wind turbines, but making the system accept all of those different voltages is beyond me. Also, building a failover circuit to switch to the dummy load to prevent overcharging the batteries is another difficult problem.
Also, how does voltage fluctuation work? Would I have to bike at one consistent speed? What happens if a cloud goes overhead while my solar panels are working? I have no idea how that stuff works. I’m glad I didn’t go into engineering.

On the plus side, I’ve already asked Jake to help, and he likes to tinker around with (and blow up) electronic stuff, so maybe this will work.

Building the system sounds cool, but…why? For knowledge and self enrichment?
